ChatGPT and Claude golf prompts that use your real stats
By Chalk Golf ·
Ask ChatGPT how to break 90 and you get the answer everyone gets: hit more fairways, avoid three-putts, take one more club. It's not wrong. It just isn't about you.
The fix is to give it your numbers. You can paste them in, or you can connect Chalk Golf to ChatGPT or Claude, so it can read your rounds, scorecards, stats, handicap record and swing analyses when you ask. Every prompt below works either way; with the connector, you don't have to copy anything.
Four rules for better golf answers
- Give it the numbers. "I three-putt a lot" gets a pep talk. "2.4 three-putts a round over my last 15" gets a plan.
- Ask for one thing. A list of twelve fixes is a list you won't do. Ask for the one that would save the most shots.
- Make it show its working. Ask which numbers it used. If it can't point to them, it's guessing.
- Ask what should change. A good plan comes with a number to watch: putts per round, fairways hit, doubles on par 4s.
Round review
- "Review my last round hole by hole. Where did I drop shots, and was it the tee shot, the approach, the short game or the putting?"
- "Compare my last round with my average over the previous 10. What was better and what was worse?"
- "Which three holes from my last round would you replay, and what would you do differently on each?"
- "I shot my best score last month. What did that round have that the others didn't?"
Scoring and stats
- "What's my scoring average over my last 10 rounds, and is it going up or down?"
- "How do I score on par 3s, par 4s and par 5s against par? Which costs me the most?"
- "How many doubles or worse do I make a round, and what usually comes before them?"
- "Where does my driver miss, left or right, and how often?"
- "How far do I really hit each club, going by my logged shots, not my best ones?"
Handicap
- "How has my handicap index moved over the last year, and which scores are in my best 8 of 20 right now?"
- "Which of my counting scores drops out next, and what do I need to shoot to keep my index where it is?"
- "What's my 12-month low index, and how close am I to the soft cap?"
- "Explain my last score differential: course rating, slope and adjusted gross."
Chalk reads your official record from England Golf or GHIN, so these work from your real scores. If you'd rather do the sums yourself, the Handicap Index calculator and score differential calculator show the working.
Course strategy
- "I'm playing my home course on Saturday. Which holes cost me the most, and where should I play safe?"
- "On the holes where I make the most doubles, where do my tee shots finish?"
- "Using my notes for this course, write me a one-line plan for each hole."
- "I've never played this course. Going by my stats, where are the holes most likely to hurt me?"
Practice plans
- "Look at my last 20 rounds and my practice log. Am I practising the right things?"
- "Build me a 3-week practice plan for the part of my game costing the most shots: 2 sessions a week, 45 minutes each."
- "I have 30 minutes at the range tomorrow. What should I do, based on my last three rounds?"
- "Give me a putting practice routine aimed at my three-putt rate. What number should change if it's working?"
Swing analysis
These need a measured swing. Chalk's Swing Studio finds the positions in your video and scores each check against a target. ChatGPT and Claude can read those analyses once Chalk Golf is connected.
- "Rate my last swing and tell me the one thing to fix first."
- "Compare my last three driver swings. Is my tempo more consistent?"
- "Does what my swing analysis flagged explain where my driver misses on the course?"
- "Turn my last swing analysis into a range session, with a drill and one swing thought."
A golf coach prompt
Paste this at the start of a chat to set the tone. It works in ChatGPT and Claude, and more on that in using ChatGPT or Claude as a golf coach.
Act as my golf coach. Use my Chalk Golf data, not general advice. Before answering, check my last 20 rounds, my handicap record and my practice log. Keep answers short. Always tell me which numbers you used, give me one thing to work on at a time, and tell me what number should change if it's working.
Rules of Golf
Chatbots are handy for rules questions on the course, and sometimes wrong. Make it cite the Rule, then check it.
- "My ball is in a penalty area marked with red stakes. What are my options? Quote the Rule number."
- "My ball moved while I was addressing it on the green. Is there a penalty? Quote the Rule number."
- "What's the difference between an unplayable ball and a lost ball? Give me the Rule numbers for each."
The Rules of Golf are written by The R&A and the USGA. The Rule text is what counts, not a chatbot's summary of it. For handicap allowances in matches and competitions, see the WHS allowance table.
Without the connector
Paste your numbers in, and the same prompts work:
Here are my last 10 rounds: [date, course, score, putts, fairways hit]. My handicap index is [index]. My usual miss is [miss]. What's the one part of my game costing me the most shots, and what should I practise this week?
It works, but you'll be copying numbers out of an app every time. Connect Chalk Golf to ChatGPT or Claude and it reads them for you. The connector is free and read-only.
