Mark it, read it, roll it
- Mark the ball and the hole. Hold your phone over the green and tap the ball, then the hole. The read appears over the live camera view.
- Chalk reads the slope. It works out how the ball will roll over the green between them, at the green speed you set, and finds the line that drops.
- Get the read. See where to aim in balls and cups left or right of the hole, the hit-it and plays-as distances, the slope, the apex of the break and the fall line.
Set it for the greens you play
Set the green speed as a Stimp reading; slower greens break less. You can also choose how far past the hole you like to roll the ball, and the read adjusts how hard to hit it. On a very steep putt, Chalk warns you when a miss won't stop near the hole.
Every read is an estimate from what the phone can measure. Use it to check your own read, and trust your eyes when the two disagree.
Green maps
On an iPhone with LiDAR, walk the green and scan it once. Chalk builds a contour map of its slopes and saves it to your phone, so you can use it again when you next play or practise there.
Questions
Which iPhones does the putt helper work on?
It needs an iPhone that supports ARKit. On iPhones with LiDAR (iPhone 12 Pro and later Pro models) it scans the green's surface for the slope. Other models measure the distance reliably, but slope and break are rough estimates.
Can I use it in a competition round?
No. Rule 4.3a of the Rules of Golf does not allow a player to measure elevation changes or use a device for a recommended line of play during a round. Use the putt helper for practice and casual golf.
Does the putt helper need Pro?
Yes. The putt helper and green maps are part of Chalk Golf Pro.
