Net practice

Practice into a net, with a target and a score

Any net, in the garden or the garage. Prop your phone behind you, mark the net and a target, and Chalk marks where each ball hits. Play a game, or just hit balls.

Set up in a minute

  1. Prop the phone up behind you. Open Practice, then Net practice. The phone faces the net, from behind where you'll stand, with the whole net in view.
  2. Line up the net and mark your target. Drag the box over the net and drop the target where you want to hit. Pick a club.
  3. Hit balls. Each hit lands on the screen with a chime. Tap to move a hit, or add one Chalk missed.

What it shows, and what it doesn't

Chalk shows where the ball hit the net. That tells you the start line of the shot: left, right, high or low of your target, and how tight the group is. It doesn't measure ball flight, carry, landing or the swing itself.

For the flight of a shot outdoors, Ball Tracer draws it over your video. For the swing, Swing Studio.

Six games

Bullseye
Ten balls. Rings score 5, 3 and 1.
Five in ten
Five in the target before ball ten.
Streak
In the target, in a row. See how long you can keep it going.
Shrink
Every hit shrinks the target. Three misses and it's over.
Gate
Ten balls. Every one through the gate narrows it.
Ground gate
No net needed. Two posts on the grass in AR, for chips and putts. Through or miss.

The games have a cartoon look, with a burst and a chime for every hit. Free practice has none of that: the app's normal look, your hits on the net and nothing to beat.

Clubs, bests and a second player

Pick a club before a game and your best is kept for that club, so a Bullseye with a 7 iron sits apart from one with a wedge. Two players can take turns on one phone. Every session is saved to your practice log with the results, so it counts towards your active days.

How it tells a shot from a practice swing

The microphone hears the strike, and only then does Chalk look for a hit. A practice swing, a net moving in the wind or someone walking past doesn't count. When it's not sure, a few frames around the strike go to Chalk's server for a second look at where the ball hit the net.

Nothing is kept unless you turn on Detector info to help improve it. Hits are estimates, and you can move any of them by hand.

Questions

Which net do I need?

Any practice net. The phone needs to see the whole net from behind you, and the ball needs to hit it. A loose net that moves in the wind is harder to read, so peg it down if you can.

Does it show carry, ball speed or where the shot would have landed?

No. Chalk shows where the ball hit the net, which is the start line of the shot. It doesn't measure flight, carry, landing or the swing, and it isn't a launch monitor.

Does it need a launch monitor or sensors?

No. It uses the phone's camera and microphone. Prop the phone up behind you, or use a small tripod.

Does net practice work on Android?

The net games do. Ground gate places its posts with ARKit, so it needs an iPhone.

Does a net session count as practice?

Yes. Each session is saved to your practice log with the game results, so it counts towards your active days like a range session.

Can two people play?

Yes. Two players take turns on one phone, and the game keeps each player's score. Bests are only kept when you play on your own.

Is net practice part of Pro?

No. It's on every plan.
